Parliamentary Meeting: Gender Equality and the Media
From January 12 to 13, ParlAmericas, in collaboration with the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, is organizing an inter-parliamentary meeting which will have as its central theme Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action on women and the media. This meeting, offered in Spanish, will facilitate the exchange of experiences and good legislative practices to strengthen gender equality in the media and promote dialogue on the progress of the Platform’s commitments.

Parliamentary Delegation visits United States during Presidential Elections
From November 6 to 9, a delegation of 11 parliamentarians from 9 Latin American countries traveled to Washington DC to observe the development of the presidential elections. The visit was carried out in collaboration with electoral observation missions (OAS and OSCE) and partner organizations also committed to strengthening democracy through transparent and equitable electoral processes.

Argentinian working group on federalism in Canada on study visit
Member of the ParlAmericas’ Board of Directors Margarita Stolbizer (Argentina) participated on a study visit in Canada for Argentinian senior politicians and parliamentarians organized by the Forum of Federations, in collaboration with the Argentinian organization Red de Acción Política.
The purpose of the visit was to learn about Canadian federalism and governance, as well as its economic and political institutional infrastructure. The delegates met with various Canadian government departments, policy and international organizations, including ParlAmericas.
This coincided with the high level visit of Gabriela Michetti, Vice-President of Argentina and President of the Senate, which included a meeting with the Executive Committee of the ParlAmericas Canadian Section, chaired by the Hon. Robert Nault (Canada), current Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development (FAAE), which was also attended by Ms. Stolbizer.

ParlAmericas and the Organization of American States (OAS) reaffirm commitment to partnership
On August 24, 2016, ParlAmericas and the Organization of American States (OAS) met in Washington to reinforce the work done in collaboration in recent years. The President of ParlAmericas, Senator Marcela Guerra (Mexico), the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, the Director General of ParlAmericas, Alisha Todd, and the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), Carmen Moreno, were present at the meeting.
The agreements signed seek to strengthen legislative policies on gender equality and transparency in the parliaments of the Americas and the Caribbean. The President of ParlAmericas and the Secretary General of the OAS placed emphasis on the organizations’ shared vision, indicating a fundamental objective: strengthening democracy and governance in the hemisphere. They also mentioned that both organizations share the vision of advancing in the achievement of more rights for more people, and their certainty that this collaboration will further the work of ParlAmericas and the OAS.
The first agreement was signed through the CIM and the second through the Secretary for Strengthening Democracy. The latter reaffirmed the commitment to continue their collective work based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2012.

Model Inter-American Law on political violence against women
Gina Godoy (Ecuador), President of the Group of Women Parliamentarians of ParlAmericas, greets the participants of the II Regional meeting of experts to discuss the Model Inter-American Law on political violence against women. The meeting was carried out with the collaboration of ParlAmericas and UN Women, in La Paz, Bolivia, on May 30-31, 2016.
