ParlAmericas and the Organization of American States (OAS) reaffirm commitment to partnership

On August 24, 2016, ParlAmericas and the Organization of American States (OAS) met in Washington to reinforce the work done in collaboration in recent years. The President of ParlAmericas, Senator Marcela Guerra (Mexico), the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, the Director General of ParlAmericas, Alisha Todd, and the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), Carmen Moreno, were present at the meeting.

The agreements signed seek to strengthen legislative policies on gender equality and transparency in the parliaments of the Americas and the Caribbean. The President of ParlAmericas and the Secretary General of the OAS placed emphasis on the organizations’ shared vision, indicating a fundamental objective: strengthening democracy and governance in the hemisphere. They also mentioned that both organizations share the vision of advancing in the achievement of more rights for more people, and their certainty that this collaboration will further the work of ParlAmericas and the OAS.

The first agreement was signed through the CIM and the second through the Secretary for Strengthening Democracy. The latter reaffirmed the commitment to continue their collective work based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2012.
