ParlAmericas participated in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Summit of the Americas

The Dominican Republic, as Pro Tempore Chair of the Summit of the Americas 2025, convened regional leaders, former leaders, academics and intellectuals to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the historic first Summit of the Americas, held in Miami in 1994.

The event was attended by His Excellency Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, Bill Clinton, former President of the United States, Laura Chinchilla, former President of Costa Rica, among other regional leaders. In addition, Jorge Castañeda, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, and Carlos Ominami, former Senator and former Minister of Economy of Chile, presented an analysis of the nine previous summits. This analysis served as the foundation for dialogue sessions on possible themes for the 10th Summit of the Americas, which will take place in 2025.

ParlAmericas was represented by its Director General, Alisha Todd, who, in an open dialogue session, shared the work of the organization. In her remarks, she highlighted ParlAmericas mission to promote parliamentary diplomacy in the Inter-American System, as well as to foster cooperation and political dialogue among the 35 national legislatures of the hemisphere. Ms. Todd also underscored the critical role of parliaments in the implementation, at the national level, of the commitments made by the member states at the Summits of the Americas. She also referred to the importance of parliamentary engagement in the Summits, which has been facilitated by ParlAmericas in compliance with the mandate established for this purpose in the Plan of Action of the III Summit of the Americas, held in Quebec City (2001), and reaffirmed in the Inter-American Plan of Action on Democratic Governance of the IX Summit of the Americas, held in Los Angeles (2022).
