ParlAmericas participates in an event on gender and race parity in the framework of the G20 Social Summit
Rio de Janeiro (BRAZIL), November 16, 2024 – Member of the Chamber of Deputies Antares Guadalupe Vázquez Alatorre (Mexico), ParlAmericas Board Member, participated as a panelist in the event “Aligning global agendas: Gender and race parity as a principle of social, economic justice and democracy”, co-organized by the Alziras Institute and the Geledés – Institute for Black Women, with the support of the National Observatory of Women in Politics of the Women’s Secretariat of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, UN Women Brazil, the Observatory of Political Reforms in Latin America, the Network of Women Political Scientists, the Brazilian Association for Combating Inequalities and ParlAmericas, in the framework of the G20 Social Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 14, 15 and 16, 2024.
During the event on gender and race parity, Member of the Chamber of Deputies Vázquez Alatorre shared Mexico’s experience with democratic parity. She highlighted effective strategies and good parliamentary practices to address the challenges in the lawmaking process as well as implementing legal reforms on gender parity as a constitutional principle. She introduced the main legal impacts and potential actions to strengthen the advancement of political rights of women in all their diversity.
The dialogue session featured Member of the Chamber of Deputies Soraya Santos (Brazil), Women’s Advocate, Member of the Chamber of Deputies Benedita da Silva (Brazil), Coordinator of the Women’s Caucus, and journalist Thais Fascina. Michelle Ferreti, Director of the Alziras Institute and Gabriel Dantas, Representative from Geledés – Institute for Black Women, also shared their reflections and perspectives.
Under the theme “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”, the G20 Social Summit – an initiative of the Brazilian federal government – is aimed to strengthen civil society participation in decision-making processes and public policy design. The C20 (civil society) and the P20 (parliaments) take part among the 13 commitment groups of the Social G20.The G20 Social Summit concluded with the reading of a declaration by various civil society representatives and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), President of the Republic, among other high-level political figures.

Women have to take part in all decision-making spaces – in law-making, public policy design – because that participation has a direct impact on improving the lives of all women.”
