ParlAmericas Takes Part in High-Level Dialogue with Science and Technology Authorities from across the Hemisphere
The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), organized the “VII Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Science and Technology” (VII REMCYT), which brought together leading authorities and experts in science and technology from across the hemisphere.
ParlAmericas was represented at this meeting by Member of the Chamber of Representatives Rodrigo Goñi (Uruguay), President of the Committee on the Future and member of the ParlAmericas Digital Caucus, and by Anabella Zavagno, Deputy Director General. In the session “Regulatory Frameworks on AI,” Representative Goñi contributed parliamentary perspectives, highlighting the importance of incorporating parliaments into debates on artificial intelligence (AI). He shared commentary on the objective of developing legislation that provides clarity about the limits and scope of this powerful tool while promoting innovation.
The meeting addressed critical topics such as the governance, regulation, and institutional frameworks for AI in the Americas and the Caribbean. Discussions covered the ethical and secure deployment of AI, its role in fostering innovation while addressing societal challenges like climate change and inequality, and the importance of public-private collaboration. Other sessions emphasized the integration of AI in security, human rights, and democracy, as well as the need for capacity building and skills development to ensure inclusive participation in the digital economy.
