ParlAmericas Condemns the Assassination of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay

August 11, 2025 | Statement

ParlAmericas receives with profound sadness the news of the passing of Colombian Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred today as a result of the attack perpetrated against him on June 7.

This heinous crime constitutes a direct attack on democracy, the rule of law, and the institutional life of Colombia, and undermines the principles that sustain peaceful coexistence in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Senator Uribe Turbay will be remembered for his commitment to public service, his steadfast defense of his convictions, and his generous contribution to the democratic life of his country. His loss is an irreparable one for Colombia and for the hemispheric parliamentary community.

ParlAmericas extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the Senate of the Republic and the people of Colombia. We reiterate our call to the authorities to promptly and rigorously identify and prosecute the perpetrators of this senseless act of violence.

Finally, we reaffirm our absolute rejection of all manifestations of political violence and our commitment to work, together with the parliaments of the hemisphere, to safeguard the integrity of democratic institutions and promote a culture of respect, dialogue, and tolerance as the only path to resolve differences.
